Solutions for the Construction of Steel Structures by Ruiz CM

What is a metal structure

A steel structure is an elaborate metal frame made primarily of structural steel components connected together by horizontal beams and vertical columns articulated by a welding process or robust bolts or rivets to support loads and provide overall rigidity. Due to the high strength of steel, these structures are reliable and require less raw materials than other types of structures.

It is one of the most reliable structural forms because of its ability to support large loads. As a result, steel structures can be used for a wide variety of applications such as single-storey buildings, multi-storey buildings and also in the construction of bridges and other infrastructure such as stadiums, airport terminals or industrial plants.

What type of steel structures do we manufacture at RuizCM?

RuizCM's clients can choose from a wide variety of steel structures.

We design, manufacture and assemble trussed, laminated, vaulted, suspended and triangular steel structures.

With special focus on the construction of:

Large span frames or large span steel structures.

Diaphanous steel structures have long proven to be one of the most reliable in the construction industry due to their versatility, durability and high strength. This type of steel structure can be unsupported on the inside, which is ideal for creating large, spacious areas such as warehouses and factories.  As there are no load-bearing walls, the layout of the space can be reorganised according to the client's needs, providing great design flexibility.

Modular Frames or Multi-Span Rigid Frames

They differ from open-plan structures in that they have internal columns to provide additional support to the structure. These interior columns help to evenly distribute the load, saving costs on the foundation and framing of the structure. Modular frames are considered a good option for large and wide buildings..

Single-slope Steel Metal Structures

The height of the side wall eaves is higher than the rest of the building, creating a sloping effect that starts at the front and goes all the way to the back. Builders can make it as steep as they prefer. It is often used in offices, commercial buildings and small warehouses. It also features columns such as modular frames. This type of frame can be good for small to medium sized buildings. The sloped design of the roof structure also makes it more aesthetically pleasing.

Light-gauge steel frame construction

A common type of construction for small buildings such as cottages, sheds or small industrial buildings. It is similar to timber frame construction, except that light gauge steel elements are used instead of two-by-four timber. Light gauge steel is steel in the form of thin sheets (1-3 mm) that have been bent to form C- or Z-sections or profiles.

Advantages of Steel Structural Steelwork Construction

There are many advantages to using steel structures. Many of them are related to the properties of steel. Below, we summarise the main ones that you will find in this type of construction:

1. High Reliability with long term performance.

Steel structures are very reliable thanks to the high uniformity and consistency properties of steel. To this is added the high ductility and elasticity of this material which determines a lower elastic limit, resistance and elongations than other traditional construction materials such as concrete or wood.

2. Standardised industrial manufacture

The rolled steel profiles are manufactured in industrial workshops using standardised machinery and production sections. All the elements are cut and prepared in covered facilities, while the joining of the components is carried out on site by installing rivets or bolts and welding the different components. In addition, certain sections of the metal structures are assembled in the factories, reducing human error and considerably increasing the speed of execution. This reduces overall costs.

3. Reduced construction time and high assembly speed

Due to the industrial nature of steel construction. The progress of the work is fast making the structures economical. The reason is that these structures can be put into operation in less time reducing the cost of labour and overheads

4. Increased strength and lightness

The high strength of steel per unit weight means that dead loads will be lower. Keep in mind that dead loads are an important part of the total loads of the structure. When the dead loads are reduced, the lower members become even smaller due to the lower weight acting on them. This is of great importance for long span bridges, tall buildings and for structures with poor foundation conditions.

5. Uniformity, durability and performance

Steel is a homogeneous and uniform material. Therefore, it satisfies the basic assumptions of most steel structure calculations carried out from the design phase. That is, the behaviour of steel, given its properties, is much easier to predict and guarantee. This is not the case for concrete structures due to material heterogeneity, cracking and non-linearity of the stress-strain relationship.

6. Ductility and warning before failure

Steel is a material noted for its ductility. Ductility is the property of a material to withstand large deformation without failure under high stresses. In the case of steel under standard tensile test specimen and after fracture the elasticity can be as high as 25 to 30%. This results in visible deflections which are evidence of imminent failure in case of overloading. Additional loads can then be removed from the structure to prevent collapse. This ductile nature of structural steel allows it to yield locally at points of high stress concentrations, redistributing these forces and preventing premature failure.

7. Ease of adding extensions to existing structures

Additions to existing steel structures are very easy to make. Connections between new and existing structures can be used very effectively. New spans or even entire wings can be added to an existing steel-framed building, and steel bridges can often be extended.

8. Long-span constructions

High-rise buildings, long-span bridges and tall transmission towers are made of structural steel. Industrial buildings up to 90 m span can be designed with plate girders or trusses. Bridge spans up to 260 m are built with steel plate girders. In the case of through truss bridges, bridge spans up to 300m have been used.

What types of joints between structural steel elements do we use in RuizCM?

We master any type of structural steel joint. That is why we can adapt the design to the requirements of your product:

1. Union by welding

Welding provides great adaptability to geometric shapes; simple structure; automatic operation without weakening the cross section; good watertightness of the connection and high structural rigidity. This type of connection is the most affordable and the most adaptable to the structural design.

2. Riveting

This type of connection is characterised by high strength transmission, reliability, good toughness and plasticity, easy quality inspection, good resistance to dynamic loading.

It is one of the safest, but demands high precision in engineering solutions and requires more complex steel installations and costly labour.

3. Connection with ordinary bolts

Convenient loading and unloading, simple equipment. When the bolt accuracy is low, it is not suitable for shearing; when the bolt accuracy is high, the processing and installation is complicated and the price is higher.

4. High strength bolt connection

The friction type has small shear deformation and good elastic performance, especially suitable for the structure with dynamic load. The load capacity of the pressure type is higher than that of the friction type, and the connection is compact.

Applications of Steel Structures

Metal structures produced in Ruiz CM are used in steel construction of a wide variety of buildings and infrastructures:

  • High-rise buildings due to their strength, low weight and speed of construction.
  • Industrial warehouses, pavilions and buildings with large spaces at low cost.
  • Residential buildings with a technique called light gauge steel construction.
  • Simple infrastructure such as metal footbridges or pedestrian bridges.
  • Multi-storey buildings such as hospitals, schools, offices and residential buildings.

We have experience in the construction of any of these buildings using only steel and structural steelwork.
